ABOUT
Toms Rudzinskis ABYSS is jazz and improvised music that steps out of the jazz club and unto the festival stage. Heavily rhythmic and melodic, bending the jazz, classical and rock influences of all band members, ABYSS plays a fusion of avant-garde and jazz exploring the possibilities of electronics.
Having stirred up the local Berlin jazz scene and Rudzinskis’ country of origin, Latvia, in 2019, the project brings together some of the most exciting and fresh faces in Europe from Berlin. Composers in their own right, the quintet paints their musical journey with expressive strokes, exciting improvisation and intense yet intricate live sound.
“Toms Rudzinskis’ ABYSS three opus cycle spoke with creative
imagination, emotional plasticity and intensity of the
artistic dramaturgy”
– Armands Znotiņš, The Grand Latvian Music Award juror in “Latvijas Avīze” newspaper on ABYSS show on 31/08/2019
Called “a talent in finding the unbeaten path where tradition meets extremely intellectual, free, complicated and interesting musicianship” Rudzinskis’ compositions open a musical conversation meant to be explored, truly highlighting his and his fellow musicians’ musical personalities. Inspired by mythologists Campbell’s “hero with thousand faces”, ABYSS tells a story of contemporary person’s search for answers through the abyss of the unknown where music is one’s greatest teacher.
Toms Rudzinskis’ ABYSS have recorded their first album at the Blackbird Music Studios, Berlin and are currently working towards it’s first album release. Melodic, emotive and musically compelling, ABYSS is an act to keep an eye on.
